A Subtle Approach

Updated: Sep 30

Bodywork is powerful. It is my belief that bodywork does not always have to be painful. Some of the most significant shifts may be a result of the most subtle approach and I am passionate about sharing the gifts of Swedish massage techniques with clients who may believe without pain there is no gain.

Swedish massage is a common massage modality that includes light to firm gliding strokes defined by effleurage, petrissage, friction, tapotement and vibration. Additional Swedish massage techniques include gentle stretching along with passive and active joint mobilization that can significantly release muscle tension. By increasing blood flow and circulation, the benefits of Swedish massage go far beyond general relaxation. By manipulating the superficial layers of fascia vital lymph is moved through the body, flushing toxins and eliminating the body’s waste.

Swedish massage is best known for reducing anxiety and stress, relieving whole body tension, and lowering cortisol levels. This gentle approach has the ability to bring the body to a safe place by calming the nervous system and creating space for healing. When we experience safe touch, we stimulate the release of feel-good hormones that impact our body, mind, and spirit.

Deep tissue massage targets the deeper structures of the connective tissues. Commonly used for sports injury, muscle spasms and areas of chronic pain, deep tissue techniques are used to break up scar tissue and adhesions deep in the muscle fibers. Therapists may use elbows, fingertips, forearms or knuckles to promote blood flow to the injured area. This targeted approach can aid in injury rehabilitation, improve mobility, and ease chronic pain.

Communicating your goals with a therapist will determine what type of massage will best suit your needs. If you are new to massage, sensitive to touch, experiencing full body tension and are looking for overall relaxation and rejuvenation, Swedish massage would be a great choice. Clients who are experiencing chronic pain in targeted areas and those who are not sensitive to heavier pressure may benefit from deep tissue techniques.

Swedish massage and deep tissue massage both hold an important role in healing. Taking a gentler approach and allowing the body space to heal holds great power.

May all the beings be at ease and happy

May all the beings be free and at peace
